The importance of girls’ education is generational. “Girls are the future mothers of any society. Every girl that receives an education is more likely to make education a priority for her children. It’s a ripple effect of positive change in the community and country.” Tariq Al Gurg, the chief executive officer of Dubai Cares, said.
The economic costs of low educational attainment for girls are high, particularly in African states like Uganda. The study finds that a government-sponsored universal primary education would likely raise earnings in Uganda by 18 percent. The education of girls is particularly important in Northern Uganda because of the social and political upheaval experienced for more than two decades because of the fight between the LRA (Lord's Resistance Army) and the Ugandan government. Our oldest girls were affected directly by the war, usually when one or both of their parents were killed. So many families were torn apart and/or murdered by the LRA that it has been a long upward climb to recovery for the entire region. Some of our younger children have been affected by the suffering that has resulted as the area recovers.
In 2007 our founder, Rehema Apio, a teacher, and Olympic athlete in Uganda, began supporting children--mostly girls--who were war orphans. When she moved to the US. she continued to support them with the help of concerned friends. In 2015 Focus Girls 4 Education was founded as a non-profit organization. We enthusiastically chose to focus on girls because they are more vulnerable and have fewer opportunities. We feel it is our responsibility to safeguard them from becoming child mothers out of desperation for survival. It is our hope that this positive change of lifestyle will allow the girls to work toward a successful and happy future.
